A new expert guide to how long food lasts in the fridge may come as a shock to millions who think the cooler is keeping their produce fresh for days on end.
For it shows that from fruit to fish, most freshly bought items are unlikely to still be good after little more than two or three days.
The advice, from the domestic gurus at Good Housekeeping, could surprise a few people who like to keep meat to milk for anything up to a week in the fridge.
Fish, including shellfish, should not hang around for longer than ONE day, soft fruit should be gone within two days along with sliced meat and soft cheese , raw joints and poultry within three days.
But even hard cheese, which many assume stays good for a lot longer, should not still be there after just ONE week, said the guide by the Good Housekeeping Institute.
It listed the length of time fresh produce without a use-by label should be kept in a fridge and the results may seem a lot shorter than many households are used to.
GHI’s report admitted: “We”ve all been guilty of keeping food in the fridge for longer than we should, but how do you know when it’s time to throw something away?
“For pre-packed foods it’s easy – just pay attention to the use-by date. But what about things like eggs, fish and meat? How do you know whether it’s time to show them the bin, or if you’re just in time to use them up!?”
The answer is to be better safe than sorry and eat salad leaves within 2-3 days, sausages within three days, green veg, along with milk, in 3-4 days and hard and stone fruits within a week at most.
The only item that may last longer is smoked salmon – because it has been smoked already – which can stay fresh for up to two weeks.
Other advice from the Institute includes keeping meat and fish on a lower shelf so there is little chance of it dripping on to other items.
It added: “Store perishable items, like jams, mayonnaise and other bottled sauces in the fridge along with dairy products, fresh and cooked meats, salads and vegetables.”
